Research Highlights

• In 1962 I predicted a scalar meson (about half as heavy as the proton) to provide the principal source of attraction between neutrons and protons in nuclei. This particle was finally listed in the official Particle Data Tables after some 48 years. The meson appears not to be a normal quark-quark-bar composite but rather a four-quark "molecule". Because it accounted for the attraction in nuclear forces so well, the particle was routinely invoked in nuclear models over the years even though it had not yet been seen. • For many years I helped analyze nucleon-nucleon data in terms of phase shifts, an important intermediate step between experiment and theory which reveals the essential features of the nucleon-nucleon interaction and greatly helps constructing models of it. In 1978 I gave the leading 60-minute invited talk on phase-shift analysis at the VIII International Conference on Few-Body Systems and Nuclear Forces, Graz, Austria:

• I proposed the first model of elementary particles where these particles exist in a higher-dimensional space-time that stretches off to infinity in all directions:

• Recently I have become interested in the possibility that distant healing, remote viewing, chi and other such phenomena are actually mediated by a physical field, not unlike the electromagnetic field, but one which does not weaken over long distances and is not impeded by obstructions like mountains, oceans, or even time translations. This can be possible if the lines of this field propagate in higher-dimensional space-time and do not diverge as they converge on the target. The field resembles a soliton. Various candidates from the lay literature come to mind: Monroe's M-field, Sheldrake's morphic field, Salter's five-dimensional life-energy field, Chinese qi, etc.
  I have proposed the following experiment to look for such a higher-dimensional field: An electron has a magnetic moment which lines up in a magnetic field like the needle of a compass. Quantum mechanics also permits the electron's magnetic moment to line up in the opposite direction. No other states are allowed. In the experiment, a volunteer tries by conscious intent to reverse the direction in which the electron's magnetic moment is pointing. We can observe this direction by taking the electron to be the single valence electron of a magnesium ion immersed in a 50-gauss magnetic field. A precisely tuned laser causes the ion to fluoresce in the ultra-violet, indeed so brightly that if one could see in the UV, then one could see this single ion with the naked eye. Instead it is seen with a photo-multipler tube. If a volunteer is able by mental intent to reverse the direction in which the magnetic moment is pointing, then the magnesium ion becomes dark. (This requires less than 1/5,000,000 the energy of a single blue photon, yet the electron's spin is extremely stable. Even a slammed door won't reverse the orientation of the spin.) A second reversal causes the ion to light up again. A volunteer causing the ion to be light and dark for appropriate long and short periods could send a message in International Morse Code. A computer could turn the Code into plain text, and with the help of a PowerPoint projector, display the text on a large screen. Thus, using his or her mind alone, the volunteer could display, say, the Preamble to the U. S. Constitution, letter by letter.
         If a volunteer were successful, then he or she would be sent outside the lab to send the message again, and if again successful, sent across the state, across the country, perhaps to another continent. (We would do this because distant healing seems to work over geographical distances, and distant PK may be mediated by the same mechanism.) If the volunteer were to succeed in all of this, then I would interpret it to mean that a new kind of field is conveying the volunteer's intent to the magnesium ion. This could be the higher-dimensional field that I proposed above. I have written the following papers to describe the experiment and the reasoning behind it.   "Consciousness and quantum-mechanical wavefunctions" Australian Journal of Parapsychology 9 (2009) 33-55. In considering the wave function of an electron, I realized in 2000 that this entity resembles human consciousness in several ways, so I hypothesized that the wave function is conscious (and a human consciousness is a wave function). Now if an electron's wave function is indeed conscious, then it might respond to a command from a human consciousness, perhaps as one human can communicate with another human through mental telepathy. With the help of atomic experimentalists, I have conceived of an experiment to look for such an effect, in particular, can human intention reverse the spin of a single electron. I describe the experiment and some applications.
  
  "Extended consciousness-electron interaction", published in the electronic Journal of the Mindshift Institute (2002) (11 pp). In this paper I suggest that it is not the human observer's consciousness that precipitates the collapse of the quantum wavefunction when a measurement of an electron is carried out. Rather, it is the electron's conscious wavefunction which precipitates the change.
  
  "Consciousness and its materialization", published in electronic journal Yggdrasil, Vol. 4 (2007) 1 (7 pp). Here I conjecture that if a volunteer's consciousness can flip an electron's spin, then a new kind of field is propagating the person's intent to the electron's wavefunction. This field does not weaken with distance and is not attenuated by obstacles. Thus it cannot be electromagnetic, weak, strong, or gravitational. I suggest that it avoids impediments by propagating in flat higher dimensions. The field might be Sheldrake's morphic field, Robert Monroe's M-field, Swejen Salter's five-dimensional life-energy field, or the field used by remote viewers like Joseph McMoneagle.
  
  "Conscious control of an electron", Journal of Consciousness Exploration & Research> 1 (2010) 184-192. Here I go into more detail on the topics covered in papers "Extended consciousness-electron interaction" and "Consciousness and its materialization", especially referring to work due to Yan Xin and Joseph McMoneagle.
  
  "Mental control of a single electron?", Physics Essays 19 (2006) 169-173. This paper is intended for physicists. After a brief review of distant healing and qi-gong alteration of a water sample's Raman spectrum, I discuss the intention experiment in some detail, and treat the electron as a passive, quantum-mechanical entity.

• I have given several talks at annual Colorado Seth Conferences concerning the role that consciousness may play in elementary-particle physics. The talks given in 2006, 2007, and 2008 are available in PowerPoint. The 2006 talk is entitled "A congregation of electrons, or, are electrons conscious?"; the talk given in 2007 is entitled "From inert particle physics to a conscious universe".; the talk given in 2008 is entitled "Magic with Maggy Harsch-Fischbach."
  
  
• A problem with formulating higher-dimensional theories in extended spaces is that no obvious experimental information exists to guide the theorist, so I enlisted the help of one of the best remote-viewers in the world, if not the best, to look into these hypothetical higher dimensions for me. Joseph McMoneagle looked at a cosmic-ray event of the highest energy ever measured by man and saw the particle creating a pointed shock wave when it entered our upper atmosphere, indicating that it was traveling at a speed greater than that of light. I interpret this to mean that the particle entered our four-dimensional space-time from higher dimensions where Einstein's speed limit probably doesn't apply. The particle's super-luminal speed may indicate why it had so much energy. Details are given in my paper "Looking into higher dimensions: research with Joseph McMoneagle",  Australian Journal of Parapsychology 8 (2008) 58-88.
  
  Since this work with McMoneagle, I have completed a mathematical model based on a five-dimensional phi-fourth lagrangian with a mass term suitable to generate soliton or kink solutions. I picture two distinct universes existing in two parallel but separated planes or kinks, with an ultra-high-energy cosmic ray originating in one plane, escaping that plane, and propagating to our universe where it initiates the shock wave and shower. This paper, entitled "Do some ultra-high-energy cosmic rays originate in higher-dimensional space time?", has been submitted to The Astrophysical Journal.
