  • 080922 SLHC Tracker Simulations Twiki Page
Harry made an announcement today on Twiki page:
... The code for strawman A is now installed in CVS and the instructions are available at [strawman A]
... Some modifications were made to the strawman B version in CVS and the instructions at [strawman B]

[CLARIFICATION] Mike has worked with Harry, and finished for a few weeks now. The config digi is now in CVS for the versions of Straw A and B. (Mike had to wait for Harry to find time, and to have the proper code permissions to be granted.)

    August 2008

  • 080820 CMS SLHC TPG (17:30 GVA, 10:30 FNAL) [indico & minutes]
Present CERN : Jim Brooke, Sridhara Dasu, Pedro (?)
EVO : John Jones, Teruki Kamon, Mike Weinberger
    1) Architecture for track trigger primitives generation, Jim Brooke (H.H. Wills Physics Laboratory)
    2) Tracker simulation input to trigger primitives, Michael Weinberger (Texas A & M University)
    3) Discussion: requirements on track trigger primitives from muon / calo studies, All

Jim Brooke presented the outcome of a discussion between him and John Jones. They agreed that the input to the trigger primitive simulation should be stored as an ID for each 'hit' pixel. Helper methods for physical position etc. would be provided by an object accessible via EventSetup. The output of the trigger primitive simulation would be stored as a vector of the input hits. For stacked detectors, this would be a pair, but alternative architectures could be provided for. Jim is in the process of refactoring his old code according to this scheme.

Mike Weinberger presented the work he has been doing on interfacing the SLHC tracker simulation with the trigger. It was pointed out that some agreement on terminology is required - what Mike calls 'trigger primitive' in his slides is what Jim calls 'trigger hit'. Mike has adapted the pixel digitization code to apply a threshold to the ADC count and output 'hit digis'. He stores the row, column and ADC count of the hit pixel. Mike asked if the trigger group needed the ADC count - the consensus from the previous meeting was that we don't. He presented multiplicity and occupancies from the Strawman A. Sridhara asked if Geoff's proposed geometry was available in the code. It is not, but it was agreed that Strawman B would provide everything we want for a first pass. Jim and Mike agreed to discuss integration of their code after the meeting.

Notes from meeting between Jim and Mike: We agreed that Mike's output would form the basis for a future 'trigger hit', although we failed to agree on a name for it. Jim needs the physical position of the 'trigger hit' - Mike said he would find out how to get this, and module associations etc. Jim would continue to refactor his code, and then would start to integrate with Mike's once that is done. We agreed that we could probably put all the code in two packages, something like SLHCUpgradeSimulations/L1Trigger and SLHCUpgradeSimulations/L1TriggerDataFormats.

  • 080503(Sa) Discussion with Wesley Smith on Trigger Upgrade
Highlights from talk by Costas Foudas (Imperial College London)
    Phase I:
  • No major change of detectors
  • Significant changes possible in electronics and readout
  • Need to investigate what is to be done to cope with L=2x10E34 using almost the same detector but more clever electronics
    Phase II:
  • Major detector changes
  • Tracking trigger will be introduced
  • Need to have a detailed plan with clear milestones and deliverables which can only come after detailed MC studies.
  • Write a new trigger TDR which summarizes out design.
  • Need a considerable amount of funds to deliver the project timely.
  • Have about 5 years to do deliver the project which is short relative to the LHC trigger development which took much longer.

  • 080410 CMS SLHC L1 Trigger Upgrade Workshop in Paris on April 10, 11 in the Becquerel amphitheater at Ecole Polytechnique [agenda]
Goal This meeting will be a follow-up meeting to various calorimeter, muon and tracking trigger workshops that have been (will be) held over the past (next) few months. The plan is to agree on a baseline architecture for the CMS SLHC L1 trigger and to identify the key items for R&D and a program of work to perform this R&D. We will be asking for reports on the R&D efforts underway and planned.

April 10: Harry Cheung's talk on Status of Simulation WG at "Trigger Upgrade Group" session, which covers Mike's work. Below are Mike's messages on April 8:

    • The pixel inefficiencies is now working. It would crash for any pixel size other than the default, but that is now fixed.
As to StrawmanB, you can now have a different pixel size for up to 6 doublet layers, so the pitch can be tuned to be equal for the various layers. The xml file has been modified for this change, and these values will propagate through FastSim for the simulation geometry. I am finishing up modifying the functions that are hardcoded, and do not pull the numbers from the topology directly. This should be done before I leave CERN.

    M. Weinberger travel itinerary: Leaving for CERN next Tuesday the 8th, and will arrive the morning of the 9th. I will then fly out to Paris for the workshop on the morning of the 10th, and back to CERN on Saturday the 12th. I will then stay at CERN for the week for the Physics/Trigger week, and then fly to Pittsburgh for Passover on the 19th. I will be returning to Chicago the next weekend. I will be on email and working all days, with the exception of the 22nd to the 25th.

  • 080408 SLHC PP Kick-Off Meeting (April 8-9) [indico] [SLHC-PP Web site]
Mission: The main aim of Preparatory Phase project of the Large Hadron Collider upgrade (SLHC-PP) is to prepare the SLHC project for a decision on the approval of its implementation by 2011. Beside the justification of SLHC by the physics results and operational experience from the first years of LHC running, the necessary ingredients for the approval will include: the maturity of new technologies required for SLHC, solutions for critical safety issues, and the formation of collaborations for the implementation, including the definition of work sharing and financial commitments. The SLHC-PP project is fully set up to address these issues and to prepare for the approval by the CERN council and by all other funding agencies involved.

    March 2008

  • 080313 (R) Formal CMSSLHC Tracker Simulation meeting (2 pm at CERN; 8 am at FNAL (Day Light Saving) [indico] [Mike's Talk]
(*) Mike's highlights at Physics & Tracker workshop (15:00-19:00 CERN) on March 11 [indico]:
    • It appears that there is great progress being made in setup and testing, and the tracker should be ready for data taking when it begins.
    • The part that is most applicable to what we are working on is the dependence of the efficiency turn on curve on alignment. The plateau value in the present CMS tracker went from over 90% to around 60% with a degradation on the mis-alignment. This is something that will be vital to make sure that we take into account for our simulations. Especially for the doublet strawman B geometry, which will use geometric properties to cut on the pt of the track.
  • 080303 (M) Mike's Instruction of how to use the configurable digis in CMSSW_1_6_10. Note this should also work for 1_6_9 - 1_6_7.

  • 080207 (Thu) Formal CMSSLHC Tracker Simulation meeting (2 pm at CERN; 7 am at FNAL) [indico]. Two strawman designs, A and B.

Here is a link to Mike Weinberger's Talk and two key points are:

    1. Jim Brooke has a framework do simulate the trigger in FastSim. Mike will contact him to avoid any duplicate work.
    2. A general discussion about using FastSim vs the Full Emulator. Most people agreed that it was a good idea to have this available.

    Jan. 2008
  • 080128 CMSSLHC Tracker Simulation meeting [TAMU Plan]
  • 080115 CMSSLHC Tracker Simulation meeting [snap shot] on the next 6-month plan. The weekly meeting date/time will be changed to Monday at 17:00 (CERN) or 10:00 (Fermilab). Two relevant points were brought up.
    1. The strawman should be as configurable as possible, and
    2. We make sure the people doing the double geometry converge with our work.
