Physics 208,  Electricity and  Magnetism

Sections 511-515, Spring 2008, Dr. Ross

General course information:

The syllabus can be seen here. (a pdf file.)
Also see the separate lab schedule
Note: the text is a new edition this year, Young and Freedman University Physics 12th edition. This is Vol. 2 of the text used last semester for Physics 218. However please do not buy a used 208 text from previous semesters; you will have an outdated edition.

What you will need is Vol. 2 of the text, plus MasteringPhysics (the online system that comes bundled with the text), and the separate lab manual. Volume 2 of Young and Freedman is sold by the local bookstores. To purchase it elsewhere such as online, make sure you get the 12th ed., with bundled MasteringPhysics if you don't already have it. If you used Mastering Physics last semester in Phys 218, your online access should continue this semester (I hope you didn't throw away the envelope), in which case you could buy the text only. MasteringPhysics can be purchased separately from their website, however you will likely end up spending more money that way. One other possibility would be the "complete" hardcover edition, in which case the Phys 208 material is contained in the second half of the text.

Labs and recitation: The first recitation will be in the second class week (Jan. 22 or 24 depending on your section), while the first lab starts the third week of classes.

Help Desk:  The Physics help desk is located in room 211 Heldenfels. Hours are: MTWR 9:00 - 4:00 and F 9:00 - 12:00.

Grade postings: online grades can be found on the elearning site for this course (same as WebCT).

Course notes and exams:

Sample Exams:  The following are exams from phys 208 or 219. The older course 219 was very similar to this course except that optics was not covered.
All online exams can now be found here.

A Formula Sheet will be attached to the in-class exams. Besides this sheet, you will not be permitted any other note-cards or references for the exams. Here is a copy of the formula sheet for exam 1, the formula sheet for exam 2, and the formula sheet for exam 3/final exam.

Course Notes and Summaries: Chapter summaries and a few other course notes can be found here.

Even answers for a few of the problems can be found here.
